Despite this, Glen did not take up his position until December 17, 1743. He served as governor until 1 June 1756, therefore becoming the longest-serving governor of South Carolina in the colonial period. Later that month, Glen returned to Europe. He died in London and is buried in Linlithgow, Scotland. In 1755, Glen negotiated the treaty with the Cherokee, known as the Treaty of Saluda Old Town. He was also responsible for promoting an official policy of divide and rule, which aimed to create in Indians an "aversion" to African Americans.
