It was headed by the Duke of York, later King James II. The company's original raison d'etre was to exploit the gold fields up the Gambia River, which were identified by Prince Rupert during the Interregnum. The company was set up after the Restoration of 1660. The company's agents were soon involved in the slave trade, as well as trading in other commodities. The Royal African Company was restructured in 1672 and held the English monopoly in slave trading until 1698, when all Englishmen received the right to trade in slaves. The Royal African Company continued slaving until 1731, when it abandoned slaving in favour of traffic in ivory and gold dust. The company traded mainly with inhabitants of the Gold Coast (now Ghana). In 1752, RAC's assets passed to the new African Company of Merchants, which continued until 1821.
