Juichi Soyeda was born in Fukuoka on 15 September 1864. He graduated from the School of Politics and Economics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1884 and went on to study overseas at Cambridge University and the University of Heidelberg. Whilst at Cambridge, Soyeda was taught by H. S. Foxwell. Soyeda returned to Japan in 1887 and soon afterwards he joined the Japanese Treasury Department. He rose through the ranks to became its Vice-Minister in 1898. Shortly afterwards Soyeda resigned from the Treasury Department to become a lecturer on economics and public finance at Tokyo Imperial University.
Soyeda resumed his career in banking when, in 1899, he was appointed president of the Bank of Formosa, then chairman of Japan Credit Mobilier Commission. Three years later, Soyeda became the president of the newly established Japan Credit Mobilier. Soyeda was also a frequent contributor to the Economic Journal and the author of the book "Finance and Budget" published in 1892. He was influencial in Japanese monetary reform including the decision to go on the gold standard in 1897. In 1913, Soyeda travelled to the United States to represent the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce, a trip prompted by the California Alien Land Law which had been passed that year. He died on 4 July 1929.
