As he was Jewish he was removed from the role in 1938 after which he and his family moved to England in 1939. Initially interned as an enemy alien then spent eight years working as a factory tool fitter. Became library assistant at the Warburg Institute from 1 January 1949 followed by position of librarian (1956-1966). Honorary Fellow of the Warburg Institute from 1968. Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society. He received the Austrian Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst in 1968.
