He then studied for 3 years in Berlin before becoming a rabbi in London. Supplementing his income by tutoring privately in mathematics and science led to several lecturing and teaching posts, and eventually to natioanl prominence in the field of technical education. In 1880 he became director of the new City and Guilds of London Institute for the Advancement of Technical Education. His wife, Katie Magnus, whom he married in 1870, was also active in the Jewish community and as an educationist. During 1906-1922 Magnus was MP for London University. He was created a baronet in 1917; his grandson Philip Montefiore Magnus succeeded him on his death in 1933. Scope and ContentAddress: Tangley Hill, Chilworth, Surrey. To Sir William [Job] Collins. Expresses his opinion that the Bill for the reform of the Senate of London University should be dealyed, and that a depuation on the matter should be received by the government.
