Between the ages of 17 and 35 he worked in the statistics division of the Anglo-American Oil Company, spending much of his free time reading and writing; a royal bounty grant (1908) and civil list pension (1915) enabled him to give up his job and write full-time. His first book of poems was published in 1902 and his first novel in 1904; thereafter he wrote and published extensively. His best-known poem is probably 'The Listeners' (1912). Offers to inscribe any books sent to his daughter and son-in-law's home in Buckinghamshire. (2) Address: The Old Park, Penn, Buckinghamshire. 'I am returning separately the six books you sent me, & it has been a pleasure to put my name in them'. Both letters are autograph, with signatures.
