Scope and ContentThe collection includes approximately 195 photos and 3010 slides. It focuses on the civil wars and state violence in Central America, which involved Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras.
The photographs were taken by professional photographers and collected by activists, including the El Salvador and Guatemala Committees for Human Rights (ESCHR), based in London. The collection includes photos, slides and negatives of views of rural life, mostly in Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and in Honduras, portraits of adults and children; refugees’ camps; and elections.
Photographers include: Jenny Matthews, Paul Smith, Steve Cagan, Mike Goldwater, Toni Lopez, Steve Smith, Peter Drury, Peter Chappell.

Photographs and slides, 1982-1994, including Herbert Anaya’s funeral, of the Guatemala army, the President of Guatemala Vinicio Cerezo; troops and police patrolling the streets, in San José de Las Flores, and Guatemala City; photos of marches, celebration of the end of the civil war, and marking the anniversary of the death of the archbishop Oscar Romero, in El Quiche (Guatemala), Guatemala City, and El Salvador; photos of Nineth Montenegro de Garcia, leader of Grupo de Apoyo Mutuo (GAM), and Maria Morales one of the leaders of Coordinadora Nacional de Viudas de Guatemala (CONAVIGUA).
Photographs and slides of children and repression including photos of rural life in Nahuala (Sololá department of Guatemala), life in el basurero (garbage dump) in Guatemala City, and internal refugee camps. Photos of families, street children, shoe-shine kids. Also includes negatives of rural life, orphans and widows, and agricultural project in the town of Chimaltenango, labourers in countryside, health care check for refugee, life in model villages.

Includes slides of the Federation of Committee of Mothers and Relatives of Political Prisoners and Murdered and Missing people (FECMAFAM) office, in El Salvador; slides of the damage after the earthquake in El Carrizal, El Salvador (10.12.1986), resettlement of the refugee camp, Calle Real, and photos of José Napoleón Duarte. Also includes the daily routine at the Asociación Comité de Madres y Familiares de Presos, Desaparecidos y Asesinados (COMAFAC).
