Scope and ContentSophia De Morgan was born in 1809 in Blackfriars, London. She was the daughter of the mathematician and political reformer William Frend (1757–1841). She played a part in the foundation of Bedford College for Women, the first university institution in the United Kingdom open to women. She was also an advocate of the anti-slavery movement and women's suffrage, and was interested in spiritualism. She wrote a book on the subject called 'From Matter to Spirit: A Record of Ten Years’ Experience in Spirit Manifestations (1863)'. This book was an account of communications from “beyond” based partly on ideas promoted by the scientist and philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772). In 1882 Sophia De Morgan published 'Memoir of Augustus De Morgan', a biography of her husband. She also wrote a book of reminiscences called 'Three Score Years and Ten' which was edited by her daughter the children's writer Mary Augusta de Morgan and published in 1895.
Sophia married Augustus De Morgan on 3 August 1837, and settled in 69 Gower Street. They had seven children, five of which were dead by the time of her own death in 1892.
