TitleMary Lago - Amiya Chakravarty letters
Reference codeMS885
Date1961 March-1977 March
Scope and ContentLetters, mostly written by Professor Amiya Chakravarty, who held various posts in religion at American universities, to Mrs (afterwards Dr) Mary Lago of the University of Missouri-Columbia. Some of the earlier letters are concerned with Lago's PhD thesis (completed in 1969) on the influence of English literature teaching in Indian universities on Bengali writers during the 1890s, or with English translations, by Lago and fellow student Tarun Gupta, of Rabindranath Tagore's plays, poems and short stories (including some published as 'The Housewarming' in 1965). Other letters refer to a scheme (never realised) for a book of translations of the work of the poet Jivanananda Das and Lago's edition of the correspondence of Sir William Rothenstein and Rabindranath Tagore (published as 'Imperfect Encounter' in 1972). The letters also contain many references to contemporary Indian affairs.
