Scope and ContentDiaries, notebooks, sketchbooks and published works relating to a tour of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant, made by between May 1750 and June 1751 by the classical scholar Robert Wood, the archaeologists John Bouverie (who died during the tour) and James Dawkins, and the draughtsman Giovanni Battista Borra. Three broad kinds of material are represented:
(i) Diary volumes and sketchbooks produced during or as records of as records of the tour;
(ii) Wood's published and unpublished writings on topics directly related to the tour and the knowledge of classical architecture and the historical and topographical background to the works of Homer that Wood gained as a result of the tour;
(iii) Wood's copies of books written by others on topics relevant to his own work, some of which he annotated.

NotesThe Institute of Classical Studies Library and the Joint Library of the Hellenic and Roman Societies are housed and administered together. Ownership of the Wood diaries rests with the Hellenic Society, not with the Institute. A pdf copy of a bibliography about Wood is attached to this description.
