Scope and ContentFive bound handwritten catalogues relating to the contents of the Porteus Library.
The library of Beilby Porteus (1731-1809), Bishop of London, housed at Fulham Palace until its deposit at the University Library in 1958. The collection is composed of approximately 4,000 volumes, including 300 volumes of pamphlets covering a wide range of subjects such as slavery, the French Revolution, travel and topography, and ecclesiastical affairs, including sermons, mostly published between 1750 and 1809. There are also a few earlier books and a later collection, mainly volumes of sermons and charges, added by William Howley.

Conditions governing accessAccess to this collection is unrestricted for the purpose of private study and personal research within the supervised environment and restrictions of the Library's Special Collections Reading Room. Access to archive collections may be restricted under the Freedom of Information Act. Please contact the University Archivist for details. At least 24 hours notice is required for research visits.

Unaddressed fragment of a letter written by Beilby Porteus (1731-1808), Bishop of London, which possibly refers to the parliamentary debates on the slave trade in 1788. An extract reads 'There will undoubtedly in so very complex a business in which so many interests are involved, be a great diversity of opinion on this [illegible] other Points. But they are now submitted to the wisdom of Parliament, and most of them will I hope this Evening be settled to your entire satisfaction'.

The collection comprises two pamphlets and associated material: An Experiment in Education made at the Male Asylum of Madras (1st Edition) by the educationalist Andrew Bell (1753-1832), signed by the author to the Lord Bishop of London (1797); An Experiment in Education made at the Male Asylum of Madras (2nd Edition) by Andrew Bell, signed by the author to the Lord Bishop of London (1805); also including a handwritten draft of the pamphlet, A Short Account of my New System of Education for the Poor by Bell, with annotations and corrections (59pp) (21 December 1807); two pages of an unidentified draft, possibly by Bell (n.d.)
