Date1836-1998
Scope and ContentThe collection is comprised of four series. These include:
• Minutes and meetings (MS1158/1): These include minutes from the Board of Directors, High Movable Conference, various districts, and related groups.
• Case files (MS1158/2): These include files and folders that relate to very specific topics and issues. These materials are largely numbered.
• Publicity, outreach, and published materials (MS11582/3): These include various magazines, journals, newspaper clippings and related papers.
• Governance, management, and administration (MS1158/4): These include business papers, various reports, appeal cases, notices of appointments, ritual books, lectures and sermon papers, and various administrative papers.
The collection largely documents Rechabite activities, business, and interests. The collection also pertains to Rechabite business in various cities, branches, and tents across Britain. The subject matter largely relates to temperance and the abstinence of alcohol, however the collection also documents the Rechabites strong Christian values, and opposition to other “vices” such as gambling. The records are largely a product of their time, and contemporary issues, such as War, are represented in the subject matter. The Rechabites were active throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
Many individual subseries and files have been sampled and described in greater detail.

System of ArrangementThe collections is arranged into four series, which are (1) minutes and meetings, (2) case files, (3) Publicity, outreach, and published materials, and (4) Governance, management, and administration. Within each box, the materials are largely arranged within their original order, with minor sorting applied.
The intellectual arrangement of the collection is represented by its “MS1158” number, such as “MS1158/1/1/1”. Physically, the collection is arranged by its original shelfmark, which is applied to each box, such as “Box 1”. Every box has an MS and original box number in brackets, such as “MS1158/1/1 (Box 80).
There are elements of overlap between the various series. For example, there are minutes located in series 4 (MS1158/4/26/1). Moreover, series 4 includes materials which may be classified as “Outreach related”, including books and similar materials. It is recommended that archive users use the key word search function on the catalogue.
