Scope and ContentThis series includes black and white photographs (prints and some negatives) of productions by Austrian and German exile theatre groups (mainly the Laterndl) and of theatre, studio and other, non-acting, photographs of Martin Miller [MM] and Hannah Norbert-Miller [HNM]. The latter group covers the Millers' careers and lives before and after emigration from Austria to the UK. The photographs of MM include some of him in character whilst working in theatres in Austria and Czechoslovakia in the 1930s; some stage photographs of MM performing during his four months at the Jüdischer Kulturbund in Berlin in 1938-1939; and some stage photographs and film stills relating to his work in the UK during the Second World War and the post-war period. In the case of HNM there are stage photographs of some of the plays in which she appeared in Austria and Switzerland in the mid-1930s; a small number of photographs probably dating from her period in Paris in 1938-1939; and numerous studio headshots taken in the UK between 1939 and around 1980. It has not been possible to idenitify some of the photographs in relation to a particular time, place or performance, and there are multiple copies of many of the photographs. There is also a small number of personal photographs of MM and HNM, as well as a file of photographs of other actors, mainly from the late nineteeth and early twentieth century.

System of ArrangementThe series has been divided into three sub-series and two files. The first sub-series includes photographs of productions and rehearsals of exile theatre companies, and naturally includes photographs of MM and HNM, as does the file of photographs of employees at the BBC German Service. Sub-series 3 and 4 contain photographs if MM and HNM's other acting work.
