Reference codeMiller/5/2
Date1939-1942
Scope and ContentThis file contains contemporary newspaper reviews of the Laterndl's productions between 1939 and 1941. The earliest reviews relate to the company's first show, "Unterwegs" in June 1939; the last one relates to the company's production of "Der Hauptmann von Köpernick" in November 1941. The articles were taken from British newspapers including "The Times", "The Spectator", "The Daily Telegraph and Morning Post", "The Manchester Guardian", "The Star" and the exile newspaper "Die Zeitung". There is also a reprint of an open letter by Oskar Kokoschka to the editors of the Austrian Centre's journal, "Zeitspiegel", entitled 'Was erwarten wir vom Theater?' ('What do we expect of the theatre?') from 1942. The file also contains a two-page extract from the "Picture Post" (27 April 1940) with a picture story based on the Laterndl's "Der unsterbliche Schwejk" / "Der ewige Schwejk", performed in April 1940. The "Picture Post" material is original, but most of the other articles are photocopies.
