Scope and ContentKen Knight was a relief worker in the British Zone from May 1945 to July 1946, mainly working with Polish displaced persons. The bulk of these papers are his letters home which give an insight into the challenges of working in occupied Germany in the immediate postwar period.
As a German speaker Knight was able to communicate with civilians and the letters record interactions with Germans and his impressions of Germany under occupation, including the Russian Zone. Knight knew Germany well and the papers contain several small diaries of his visit to Germany in 1937. He also enjoyed the theatre and the papers contain multiple programmes of performances at the state theatre in Brunswick.
The post-war letters give an insight into Knight’s work as a lecturer in German Studies.
