Elsa Fraenkel (nee Rothschild) was born into a prosperous Jewish family in Bensheim, Germany. She trained at the Karlsruhe Academy before marrying Dr Georg Fraenkel and moving to Hanover in 1918. There she was a member of Kurt Schwitters’ cultural circle. Fraenkel specialised in portrait sculpture, and her works were exhibited across Germany. Following her divorce and the Nazis coming to power in 1933 Fraenkel moved to Paris with her two children before emigrating to London in 1935. Fraenkel continued to work as a sculptor, exhibiting in the UK, as well as Israel, the US, and Germany after the war. Fraenkel changed her name to Elisabeth Dane when she became a British citizen in 1947 but continued to exhibit under her German name. Elsa Fraenkel died in Bangalore, India in 1975. Her work is represented in UK public collections including the Ben Uri Collection and the Tate Britain.
