Scope and ContentThis sub-sub-series contains typescripts and manuscripts of poems, plays and fragments of a novel by Jura Soyfer, many of which were written, performed or used as source material by one or more of the exile theatre groups. Martin Miller read Soyfer's "Lied des einfachen Menschen" in June 1939, in the very first "Kleinkunst" (political cabaret) show staged by the Laterndl. In January and February 1940, the Laterndl performed three of Soyfer's plays on a series of evenings dedicated to his work and in memory of him. Another exile theatre group, the Austrian Youth Players, performed extracts from Soyfer's play "Astoria" in about 1942. Some of the material may have possibly have originated in Austria and been smuggled out for safekeeping by one or more exiles, but this is not known for certain. Another possibility is that the work was written down from memory or copied from other copies smuggled out of Austria.
